Mike Eckroth Trio Southwest Tour 2017




With Puerto Rican musicians bassist Alex “Apolo” Ayala and drummer Joel Mateo, Eckroth’s newest trio explores the outer edges of jazz, latin jazz, Cuban and Puerto Rican music.  Featured on Eckroth’s recent album Piano and Rhythm, the trio will be performing compositions from that album as well as a mixture of known music and new compositions. 




Michael Eckroth bio

Michael, pianist and keyboardist, is a native of Phoenix, Arizona and currently resides in Jackson Heights, NY. He recently completed his PhD degree in jazz performance at NYU (dissertation title: Early Cuban Piano Improvisation: 1937- 1949) and currently leads or collaborates in a number of projects in varied genres of music. Michael recently released the album Piano and Rhythm with a cast of New York latin greats. Other recent collaborative recordings include duo with Ron McClure, Hello Stars, the recent La Voz De Tres album Sueños y Delirios, the Chulo Records album collaboration with the Cuban singer Pepito Gomez, as well as numerous sideman jazz recordings. From 2010-2012 Michael toured extensively with the John Scofield New Jazz Quartet, which played in many of the major club venues in the United States in addition to venues and festivals in over 20 countries. With other groups, Michael has performed all over Europe and the Americas, as well as in many U.S. club and festival venues. 

Recent notable performances include the Magno Alexandre/Michael Eckroth quartet tour dates in Switzerland and the Tucson Jazz Festival with La Voz de Tres. Upcoming releases include an Eliot Zigmund, Chris Cheek et al. album as well as another Ron McClure trio record. Upcoming performance dates for Michael include Mezzrow, Smalls and other venues in NYC. In addition, Michael is teaching jazz piano at Dartmouth college for the spring 2017 semester. 
















Joel Mateo bio




Joel Mateo, drummer and percussionist from Ponce,  Puerto Rico, began his musical studies at the Escuela Libre de Música Juan Morell Campos in Ponce, PR, going on to complete a BA in the Inter-american University in PR and then an MA at the Aaron Copland School of Music in NYC. Known for his musical range, he has played or recorded with international artists such as Papo Vazquez, Miguel Zenon, Andy Gonzalez , Spanish Harlem Orchestra , Tego Calderon, Elio Villafranca , Mitch Frohman, and La Mala Rodriguez. Currently a resident of Brooklyn, NY, Mateo continues to be an active member of the NYC musician community.




Alex “Apolo” Ayala  bio

Puerto Rican Bassist Alex "Apolo" Ayala embodies the spirit of the multilingual musician, having extensive experience in both jazz and latin jazz music. He has performed and recorded with the likes of Gilberto Santarosa,Roberto Rohena, Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz, Tito Nieves, Tito Rojas, Puerto Rican Power, Luis “Perico” Ortiz, Giovanni Hidalgo, Antonio Hart, David Sanchez, Edsel Gomez, Paoli Mejias, Ralph Irrizary, Jerry Gonzalez, William Cepeda, Mitch Frohman, Los Pleneros de la 21. He studied and graduated with honors from Escuela Libre de musica de Hato Rey, and later on the renowned Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico, where he studied with legendary bassist Eddie Gomez and renowned saxophonist David Sanchez, among others. He has been a NYC resident since 2013 where he continues his musical trajectory.
